Downeast Salmon Federation Announces First Annual Smolt Bolt 4-miler

On Saturday, May 11th, 2013 at 10:00 AM, the Downeast Salmon Federation will host a 4-mile running race on the Downeast Sunrise Trail in Machias and East Machias Maine. The race will be a fundraiser to help complete renovations on DSF’s new East Machias Aquatic Research Center. DSF is already using the EMARC facility and is raising funds to create a classroom, a wet lab and finish the visitor center.

The Race:

Smolt Bolt

The Smolt Bolt is so named because the race takes place when juvenile Atlantic salmon smolt, undergoing anatomical changes, and head out to sea. In this point-to-point course, participants will start at the Machias dike and run along the beautiful Downeast Sunrise Trail to EMARC in East Machias. The dirt trail is wide, flat and free of cars. The scenery along this section of trail makes the Smolt Bolt a run to remember; both sides of the trail are surrounded by river, tidal flats, woods and blueberry barrens. Ambulance presence, plenty of flaggers and shuttle service to the start will make this race a hassle-free event.

The Bloater Bash:

The Bloater Bash (named for the whole smoked alewives called “bloaters”) will happen at EMARC in conjunction with the Smolt Bolt. Runners and spectators can taste delicious dishes made with our own bloaters from DSF’s heritage smokehouse. Everyone will be able to tour the smokehouse and watch volunteers prepare one of Maine’s traditional food sources. The hatchery at EMARC will be in operation and open for tours during the event!

More on EMARC:

The establishment of EMARC has allowed DSF to raise juvenile salmon in our innovative fall parr program, engage with more Washington County students, and continue our efforts to implement a watershed-approach conservation plan for diadromous (sea-run) fish species. Funds raised through the Smolt Bolt and Bloater Bash will help us complete the final phase of our building to include classroom space, a wet lab and a visitor center.

Registration Information:

Advance registration $15 until May 3rd, same day registration $20.
