ELLSWORTH – With dead fish appearing all in the Union River, The Downeast Salmon Federation is asking support from the community.
It’s been a trend for a few years now, fish are trying to swim downstream but The Downeast Salmon Federation said the turbines of the hydro power dams are killing them and some are getting stuck.
Those looking to make their voices heard about the current status of the federal re-licensing process of the Leonard and Graham Lake hydro-power dams are encouraged to attend a meeting on the topic.
Fisheries biologist, Brett Ciccotelli stated “This is the time right now before the end of 2017, where you can as a community make comment directly to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, FERC, which is the group that issues the new license, to say, in this new license. We’d like to see things change, we are not happy with the way this dam is operated today.”
They believe that a simple modification could save many fish.
Currently some of these dams are just there for power.
That meeting is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Waltham Town Office.
